Taronga Supports Earth Hour

Taronga Supports Earth Hour

Did you know? An estimated 1 billion people took part in Earth Hour 2010…wow! Taronga Zoo is supporting Earth Hour again this year at both our Zoos, including a special dedication to the event during our Twilight Concert. Taronga gets involved to show support and raise awareness for sustainability, our planet and our wildlife. Find out more here.Switching off your lights at home and getting your friends and family involved is something we can all do to send a united message about global action against the threat of Climate Change. I’ll be taking part again this year with my family including my four year old son, who is part of our next generation. The message he takes with him by sitting by candlelight and going without the telly for an hour is simply that we all need to take care of our planet and our animals. I hope it’s a message that resonates with him through to adulthood, because the reality is that he needs to be part of solution more than any other generation before him. When you see the lights go out across Sydney Harbour or at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco I think it helps us appreciate that regardless of our country or culture that we are all tackling this issue together. So, grab yourself some candles, those nearest and dearest, and join Taronga and its staff to “switch it off” for Earth Hour 2011. Good luck!- Emma, Taronga Environmental Sustainability Manager
