Taronga Zoomobile Wins Award at the Camden Show

Taronga Zoomobile Wins Award at the Camden Show

Over the weekend, Taronga’s Zoomobile went to  the annual Camden Show.We attended as part of Project Habitat, a community outreach program sponsored by Boeing Australia.  Project Habitat aims to raise awareness of Australia’s unique biodiversity and encourages communities to create more habitats in their backyard for wildlife as well as adopt environmentally friendly practices.

Previous years at Camden have seen the show happening in pouring rain, so we were delighted to be involved this year with such glorious sunny weather! Friday was a schools’ day, so from the moment the gates opened until two o’clock, we had an endless stream of school children delighted to meet our scaly friends, including Roy the Tortoise, Acorn the Shingleback Lizard and Warnie the White Lipped Tree Frog.

Saturday was also a jam packed day! Despite the scorching heat, families galore attended the day, checking out all the different stalls the festival had to offer. Our staff was on hand, educating everyone about our amazing animals and encouraging them to make wildlife habitats in their own backyards. Many people were fascinated to learn that the scales on Leopold, our Spotted Python, are actually made from keratin – the very same protein found in our fingernails and hair. Leopold didn’t seem so scary after people heard that!

Of course, the highlight of the day though was the annual Camden Show awards. Each year, representatives from Camden Show visit every single display and present the best stalls with awards. Taronga Zoo was very honoured to take Third Place in the Educational Display category. This is the second year running that we have attended the Camden Show and received this award.

Overall, it was a fantastic two days with over 40,000 people attending the show. We loved meeting and speaking with everyone who visited our stall and we hope everyone learned something new about our amazing Australian wildlife.
