Taronga is delighted to celebrate Lemba the chimpanzees first lap around the sun

Lemba has brought our Chimpanzee community, keepers, staff, students, volunteers and guests endless joy through her curiosity, playful nature and unique personality since her arrival.

This milestone provides a wonderful opportunity to witness the strong bonds within her Chimpanzee community, to learn more about the remarkable species she represents and the importance of conservation efforts in securing a future for chimpanzees and their natural habitat.

Chimpanzee’s are our closest living relatives, sharing 98.6% of our DNA, and they’re calling on you to help their survival. Chimpanzee’s are classified as Endangered due to habitat loss, low reproductive rates and illegal wildlife trafficking for the pet trade and bushmeat.

You can directly help Chimpanzees by donating your old mobile phones on your next visit to Taronga. Mobile phones contain a mineral called coltan which is predominantly mined in Central Africa and is directly linked to habitat destruction and the decline of at least 10 of Africa’s primate species.
