As an outdoor event, the Christmas Concert at Taronga is subject to weather. Please note the event will proceed rain or shine. The event will be cancelled only if the weather poses a safety threat to patrons, staff or performers at Taronga Zoo during show time.
We strongly recommend you come prepared with wet weather gear, raincoats and ponchos and something waterproof to sit on in case of rain (umbrellas may be used at the rear of the lawn only. We endeavour to provide as much notice as possible regarding any changes to the event due to weather, however as weather conditions are unpredictable this status may change at any time. Patrons accept the risk that weather they consider unsatisfactory may occur on a concert night and acknowledge that a performance may be cancelled by Taronga due to dangerous weather conditions at the time of or during the performance.
Is the event accessible?
How will the animals respond to the noise and extended opening hours for the Christmas Concert?
Rest assured that Taronga’s first priority and concern is always the welfare of the remarkable animals in our care. The location of the Concert stage and guest route on the evening at Taronga Zoo have been carefully chosen to ensure the most direct route to and from the event location.
Taronga’s animals also have access to the comfort and shelter of their night dens and inside areas, but it’s not uncommon for certain animals to choose to remain outside during night events.
Planning has included detailed assessments from keepers, veterinarians and behavioural studies experts to ensure that the event will not be problematic for our animals. Additional keepers that are very familiar with the behaviours of all our animals will work later shifts to monitor them.
Will there be any animals on display?
No animal exhibits will be on display for this event. Most of our animals retire to their night quarters for the evening.
How you can help
Here are our tips to help reduce the impact of our collective footprint on the wild creatures that we share this planet with:
1. Reuse your own – raid your cupboards for any fun, Christmas themed items (such as Santa or Christmas themed hats and glowing items) you have already purchased and bring them along. Most will have batteries that can easily be changed to bring it back to life!
2. BYO Bottle - We are promoting the use of reusable bottles and provide free water refill stations, which will be available for you. Please remember to bring an empty reusable bottle with you through security. Refer to map for location.
3. No Glow - Whilst they might shine bright for a night, unfortunately glow sticks cannot be recycled. Why not try wearing bright, neon coloured clothing instead?
Taronga has some steep slopes and steps. To get the most out of your night comfortable clothes and flat, non-slip shoes are highly recommended. Some pathways may have low level lighting, we recommend caution is used in these areas.
Taronga Zoo is a smoke-free site. Smoking is prohibited in all zoo buildings, vehicles and outdoor areas. Guests who wish to smoke need to exit the zoo via the main entrance where there is a designated smoking area at Taronga. We request that guests dispose of their cigarette butts responsibly.

For the safety of other guests as well as our resident animals, any guest who is found acting in a socially disruptive manner may be removed from the Zoo grounds at the discretion of Taronga Zoo security and management. Free water refill stations are also available on site, so bring your empty reusable water bottles, no glass permitted!
