Workshop overview

This Year 11 Depth Study introduces students to the critical role of observation in driving scientific investigation. With more than 4,000 animals in its care, Taronga Zoo Sydney provides the ideal environment for students to plan, observe and record authentic animal behaviour as part of a full‑day inquiry experience.

Behavioural observations allow scientists to collect primary data, identify patterns, and test hypotheses that support animal wellbeing and survival. Throughout the day, students gain hands‑on experience in scientific observation, guided by Taronga scientists, keepers and educators who work daily to monitor behavioural indicators, conditioning, enrichment and welfare outcomes.

Learners engage with real investigative processes — developing questions, planning methodologies, recording data, and communicating findings. This depth study strengthens the Working Scientifically skills central to Stage 6 Investigating Science, while immersing students in real‑world research environments and applications.

What’s Involved

This full‑day program is available only at Taronga Zoo Sydney and includes:

  • A seminar delivered by Taronga Keepers and Educators on using behavioural observation to support animal care (e.g. innate vs learned behaviours, conditioning, enrichment).
  • Workshops delivered by Taronga scientists who study animal behaviour and welfare.
  • Student‑designed investigations, including the opportunity to plan and conduct ethograms around the zoo.
  • Close‑up animal encounters to deepen understanding of behaviour, adaptations and welfare.
