Workshop overview

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure as students join a knowledgeable Taronga Educator on an immersive walking tour through the stunning landscape of Nura Diya, meaning ‘Upper Australia.’ This unique experience invites students to step into a world where nature and culture are deeply intertwined. During the tour, students will discover an array of native animals and plants, learning firsthand about the rich biodiversity that calls this place home. Developed in close collaboration with Taronga’s Aboriginal Education Officer, the experience offers a powerful insight into the traditional uses of native species by Aboriginal People.

Students will explore how Aboriginal communities have lived in harmony with the land for thousands of years, using sustainable methods to care for the environment and its incredible resources. They will hear stories and uncover knowledge about bush foods, medicinal plants, and the vital role these organisms play in the ecosystem and Aboriginal culture.

Note: This is an outdoor walking program and will go ahead in most weather conditions, so we encourage students and teachers to come prepared for the day. Our educators are passionate about delivering this experience in Zoo grounds and enjoy working with the natural elements to create a memorable learning opportunity. If weather conditions become unsafe or prevent us from proceeding outdoors, the program will move indoors to a prepared alternative session.
