Workshop overview

The Meet a Keeper program is a full‑day immersive experience designed for students who are fascinated by animal care, wildlife conservation, and the work carried out behind the scenes at Taronga’s zoos. Ideal for those considering a future in zoo keeping, animal husbandry, or conservation, this program offers a rare and inspiring look into real career pathways.

The day begins with a guest speaker panel featuring Taronga Zoo Keepers, Educators, Human Resources staff, Taronga Training Institute team members and youth volunteers from YATZ.

Students gain valuable insight into the qualifications needed for animal care roles, day‑to‑day responsibilities, the challenges and rewards of the profession, and the diverse career opportunities within the zoo and conservation sectors.

After the presentation, students explore Taronga Zoo before heading to a mystery behind‑the‑scenes animal tour, providing an authentic and unforgettable look at the work involved in caring for wildlife. This experience supports senior students in building understanding of animal welfare, career development and pathways in the zoo and conservation industries.
