Workshop overview

Scientific inquiry relies on gathering evidence to form well‑reasoned conclusions about the world around us. In this workshop, students step into the role of scientists to explore the key inquiry question: How does observation instigate scientific investigation?

Through guided observation of animals, students will learn how close attention to behaviour can spark meaningful scientific questions. They apply the scientific method by developing hypotheses, identifying dependent and independent variables, and planning reliable investigations. Int his unique environment working with real animals, students will collect primary data to explore behaviour patterns and consider how environmental and biological factors influence what they see.

Outcomes

Content

Science - Working Scientifically

  • SC4-WS-02: Questioning and predicting - identifies questions and makes predictions to guide scientific investigations.
  • SC4-WS-04: Conducting investigations - follows a planned procedure to undertake safe and valid investigations.
  • SC4-WS-08: Communicating - communicates scientific concepts and ideas using a range of communication forms.

Questioning and predicting

  • Identify questions and problems that can be investigated scientifically.
  • Make predictions based on scientific knowledge and observations.

Conducting investigations

  • Follow the planned procedure, including the measurement and control of variables.
  • Record observations and measurements accurately, using correct units for physical quantities.

Communicating

  • Present findings and ideas in a range of communication forms, including using relevant scientific terms, diagrams and graphical representations, as appropriate to audience and purpose
