Workshop overview

Data is everywhere and by participating in Wild Data will have the opportunity to collect data and contribute to the ongoing collection of a large dataset.

During a lesson with Taronga Educators, students will learn ways they can collect data in their school playground and how it’s analysis could contribute to broader environmental understanding. While in the zoo students will use their own devices to contribute to a large dataset, allowing students to choose variables to analyse and conduct statistical analyses.

Note* This is a digital data collection activity requiring students to bring their own device to collect data that will be added to a large dataset that can be used by schools.

Content

Science

  • SC4-DA1-01: explains how data is used by scientists to model and predict scientific phenomena
  • SC4-WS-06: uses data to identify trends, patterns and relationships, and draw conclusions
  • Collecting, using and analysing datasets
  • Formulate and investigate scientific questions that can be addressed with data
  • Conduct repeated experimental trials to calculate and compare the mean and range of data collected by different groups to discuss the accuracy and reliability of experimental data
  • Analyse data collected from a range of student investigations to look for patterns and test whether data is consistent with an initial prediction

Taronga Education is dedicated to providing inclusive and accessible learning experiences for all students. Our aim is to support every student’s participation and engagement in our workshops, and would be happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments for your students.
