Supporting conservation, science & wildlife rehabilitation

As a world leader in wildlife management, Taronga continuously monitors the health and welfare of animals across its conservation and science programs, wildlife rehabilitation efforts, and in the wild. This includes addressing the challenge of successfully monitoring the welfare of wild animals remotely when direct observation isn’t possible.

New and evolving technologies are being developed and applied to detect potential welfare concerns in real time.  Using these technologies, Taronga’s scientists collect and analyse data from both wild and zoo-based animals using field observations, video footage, drones, and citizen science. These approaches generate rich datasets that reveal fine-scale individual movements as well as broader behavioural patterns. This information is vital to understanding reproductive success, habitat preferences, environmental influences, movement and migratory patterns to holistically understanding animal welfare over time.
