Marine conservation

Great Southern Oceans plays a vital part in marine conservation through public education about these precious creatures and their natural habitats, research, breeding and field conservation.

Visitors can come face-to-face with a swimming Seal as they peer through the glass windows of the Submarine Research Station into huge pools. Little Penguins can be seen through viewing windows at the bottom of their custom-designed pool where they swoop and glide playfully through the water.

Alongside our Little Penguin colony live our Fiordland Penguins, one of the most threatened penguins in the world. Taronga is home to the world’s only breeding program for these rare birds.

Choose sustainable seafood

More than three billion people around the world rely on seafood for protein in their diet, yet we are overfishing our oceans at an alarming rate. By choosing MSC-certified seafood, you can be sure that the food you are eating has come from a sustainable source that protects wild animals like seals. Look for the blue fish tick to be a champion for the wild.

Come and experience Taronga's famous Seals for the Wild Presentation, powered by Red Energy, on every day at the Seal Theatre (Map Ref. F9). Meet Bondi, Murphy and all their friends as they show off their intelligence and enjoy enrichment through training with keepers.
