Pangolin Protection

Pangolin Protection

Save Vietnam’s Wildlife (SVW) rescues several hundred critically endangered Sunda Pangolins each year, all confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade. Since the organisation’s inception in 2014, it has received over 800 Sunda Pangolins. After a period of rehabilitation, including quarantine and a health check, any healthy pangolin is released into a protected area in Vietnam.

Taronga works with SVW to provide nutrition advise to support enhance the wellbeing of rehabilitated pangolins. We are also supporting SVW’s work to develop a disease risk strategy for Sunda Pangolin releases. This information and the international standard protocols that will be produced, will help to ensure that Sunda Pangolin releases in South-east Asia are supporting the conservation and recovery of wild populations. This will be a global first in pangolin conservation, and will help to drive similar processes for the seven other pangolin species.
