Visitors can explore the secret life of sharks, help create toys for a playful pair of Sun Bears, see a bright orange François' Langur swinging through the trees and meet petite piglet, Thumbelina, at Taronga Zoo these school holidays.

Taronga’s Seal Cove exhibit is playing host to a small group of Port Jackson Sharks, a type of Bullhead Shark found around southern Australia, in the next stage of an exciting research project delving into the social behaviour of sharks.

Researchers will be fitting the sharks with accelerometers on their dorsal fins to collect data on their behaviour, movements and interactions in Taronga’s specially-modified exhibit.

“We hope this exhibit will give visitors a window into Taronga’s research activities and also encourage a greater appreciation for these mysterious and often misunderstood marine animals.”

The best place to see the sharks is the floor to ceiling viewing window inside the Zoo’s lower entrance, where keepers will be doing special talk at 3pm every day during the school holidays. The Port Jackson Sharks will be at Taronga throughout the holidays before they are released back into the wild.

Taronga is also highlighting its commitment to Sun Bear conservation during September and visitors will be invited to create enrichment toysto keep the Zoo’s two Sun Bears, Mr Hobbs and Mary, busy for spring.

Come to the Sun Bear exhibit and learn how to build an enrichment treat to challenge these clever bears and encourage their amazing foraging skills. Visitors can also learn more about the world’s smallest bears at the daily keeper talk.

The latest and brightest addition to the François' Langur family, Embe, is growing more confident by the day. The tiny orange monkey is easily spotted amongst the trees along the Rainforest trail.

Visitors to the Backyard to Bush area will be able to meet some favourite barnyard animals throughout the school holidays. Young piglet Thumbelina will be meeting guests on special walks through Backyard to Bush every morning of the school holidays at 10:45am, and the sheep will be playing follow-the-leader down to the Concert Lawns at 11:30am.

The Zoo is offering a $1 entry ticket to visitors on their birthday throughout its Centenary year, with the help of Centenary presenting partner ANZ. People can register on Taronga’s website to receive a $1 voucher to use on their birthday.
