What do the Water Police, La Trobe University and the Royal Australian Air Force have in common? Give up? Well, they all have a Wedge-tailed Eagle as their emblem, and when you check out the pictures of our new Wedgie, it’s not hard to see why.

He came out of quarantine last week and here are the first photos of him with our Bird Show Manager, Matthew, during his first venture onto the Bird Show lawns.

Wedge-tailed Eagles are regal looking birds, and we think our new arrival lives up to this reputation. Our Bird trainers are very excited about this young male which will hopefully join our QBE Free Flight Bird Show in the future.

We haven’t had a Wedgie in the show for a few years, but we’ve been on the look-out for a while,  and this youngster winged his way to us after being found in Monbulk, Victoria. He spent some time at Healesville Sanctuary, but it soon became apparent he wouldn’t have survived in the wild, so we’ve provided him with the next best thing, a home at Taronga Zoo.

We’re thrilled that the Victorian bird is relaxed and calm. It's cautiously quiet and seems to have a great personality. At the moment, Matt is spending a lot of time with the bird, to help him adjust to his new surroundings.

It’s still early days for this young bird, and there’s no guarantees he will make it into the Bird Show, but we hope,  one day in the future,  visitors will be able to witness the spectacular flight of this aerial specialist and stare in awe at Australia’s largest bird of prey.Our New Regal Eagle
