Having received a Zoo Friends Conservation Fellowship, I have recently returned from Way Kambas National Park, in Sumatra’s south-east. Here, I ran a workshop on the identification and surveying of the species of Frogs, Toads, Turtles and Tortoises likely to be found in the Park. Following a day-long presentation, a group of Parks Rangers, Conservationists and I, travelled into the field to locate and identify amphibians and reptiles.

During a three-day expedition, we identified up to ten frog species, as well as several snakes and lizards.

 It was great to be able to work closely with the local National Park Rangers, who are obviously a very committed group of people. Way Kambas National Park is teeming with wildlife; most notably is the bird and mammal diversity, however with an increased focus on the smaller amphibians and reptiles, a great degree of biodiversity can be appreciated within this very special natural reserve.
