Taronga marches in the Twilight Parade

Taronga Zoo staff took a dragon to the Chinese New Year Twilight Parade last Sunday as the official Charity Partner of the City of Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival for 2012.From Town Hall to China Town, our Director and 30 zoo staff and volunteers danced and marched behind our massive 5.5 meter Komodo Dragon float. The float was a huge hit with the crowds. Many passersby said that we had the best choreography and enthusiasm which certainly put a smile our faces to see  everyone was enjoying our passion for wildlife conservation. The real life ‘Komodo Dragon’ is under pressure in the wild due to low numbers and we’re supporting Komodo conservation in Indonesia, while also preparing to breed Komodos in future, with a clutch of hatchlings due to arrive this year.Thirty staff members and Volunteers danced behind the float, wearing the Taronga uniform offset with glowing red dragon ‘claws’ on their fingertips. The uniformed Zoo team danced to “The Dragon”, a special dance remix in Mandarin which tells the story of the Water Dragon.  The float with its special multi-colour pulsing lights looked just sensational against the evening sky. This Sunday come and cheer us on at the Dragon Boat Racing at Cockle Bay Wharf, Darling Harbour from 8am. Taronga’s team of 24 is in three races at 9.50am, 12.20pm and 1.50pm. Find out more about the races here.
