This week Taronga Western Plains Zoo received six young Tasmanian Devils bred at its sister Zoo, Taronga, in Sydney. The five males and one female are starting to settle in to their new home. The transfer of these animals not only contributes greater genetic diversity in the zoo-based populations and opens up more breeding opportunities for Taronga Zoo next year.Whilst the young Tasmanian Devils won’t be part of Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s breeding program this year, they will definitely play their role in the following years to help breed an insurance population for the species, which is being decimated in the wild by the fatal Devil Facial Tumour Disease.
