Taronga Zoo’s Sumatran Tigers, Sakti, Jumilah, Kembali and Kartika set out on a tree change to Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo almost a year ago now, whilst their exhibit in Sydney is under redevelopment.

All four tigers settled in well to their new home and enjoyed exploring their new environment. Jumilah and Kartika developed a good relationship quickly with their new keepers, but Kembali was a little reserved to begin with. He has since come out of his shell.

The Taronga Zoo Tigers were fascinated by one of the Taronga Western Plains Zoo Tigers, female Indah. We would often observe them interacting together, and Jumilah and Kartika also took a shine to our resident male, Satu.

Working with our new residents has been a great challenge, particularly working with Kembali who was so shy in the beginning. He now is so much more confident and likes to follow his keepers around and explore his surroundings. We have all developed a real soft spot for our tree changers and will be sad to see them return to Sydney when their amazing new home is opened around Easter 2017. But for the time being we continue to enjoy their company and watch them enjoy our country hospitality a little longer.
