Kani the Hippo calf is now over two months old and is continuing to go from strength to strength. He is developing nicely and meeting the usual growth targets.

Kani is eating more hay and grass now but still relies heavily on mum’s milk. In the wild calves will nurse for approximately six months although Cuddles has a history of nursing her calves for up to two years! She is a very nurturing mother.

He has also been learning to come into the night yards with mum Cuddles, which is an important part of the training to ensure keepers can get a good look at their overall health up close.

At this stage Cuddles and Kani are still by themselves but over the coming months the pair will be introduced other hippos at the Zoo.

During the winter months guests to the Zoo can often see the Hippos out sunbaking absorbing the warmth from the sun before the cold night comes again.
