How YOU can help support Koalas

It’s difficult to comprehend and imagine the land down under without the Koala, however this much-loved species is facing an uncertain future if we don’t make a change.

Habitat loss remains the greatest threat to these beautiful marsupials. With suitable environments shrinking, and forests only able to support finite number of Koalas, populations are being fragmented, making it harder for Koalas to find food and breed. Disease and climate change events such as drought and bushfires have also had a devastating impact. That’s why Taronga is prioritising the conservation of Koala as an animal of utmost importance to the Australian landscape.

Although this may seem daunting, everyone has a role to play in securing a future for Koalas. Below are a few simple actions you can take to help support Koalas.

Choose Recycled Toilet Paper or Use Bamboo on the Loo

Over 1.5 million trees are flushed down Australian toilets annually, contributing to deforestation. Consider 100% recycled paper or bamboo alternatives, both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Look for the FSC logo to ensure you are truly picking a choice free from deforestation!

Grow native plants at home and in your community

Replanting native species in your yard or community is vital for wildlife restoration. Native plants require less maintenance, support local ecosystems, and enhance biodiversity. Even small spaces like balconies can make a significant impact.

Choose FSC-Certified products

FSC is an international eco-label used on products made from forested materials which certifies that these materials were sourced sustainably. It can be found on products such as toilet paper, books, tissues, paper towels, tyres, and timber products. Many leading brands use FSC in all their products so chances are you have purchased it even if you have never noticed it before. Look for products with one of these three FSC labels so you can feel confident that you are supporting sustainable forestry and helping end deforestation.

Take it slow on the roads

Motor-vehicle incidents pose a threat to Koalas and other wildlife. Drive slowly, especially in known wildlife habitats, and remain vigilant for animals crossing the roads.

Keep your furry friends at a distance

Unfortunately, our beloved furry friends can sometimes be a major problem, not just for Koalas but all native wildlife. Domestic and more commonly feral cats are capable of taking and killing a joey or an adolescent Koala and dogs are also known to attack Koalas if they come to the ground in search of water or a new tree. To ensure you keep both your furry friend and our incredible wildlife safe you can adopt the following habits:
-    Ensure when your cat is outside it is wearing a collar with a bell. This allows native wildlife to hear the cat approaching and gives them the chance to getaway
-    Make sure you bring your cat inside overnight as this is when wildlife is most active
-    Always walk your dog on a lead around bush and forest areas
-    Try to keep your canine friend away from gum trees

Switch to renewable energy

We’ve made the switch to renewable electricity at Taronga, and you can too! Switch your household electricity to a company that supplies renewable energy to the grid. If you are happy where you are, you can also contact your current electricity provider about purchasing Greenpower for a few extra cents per kilowatt hour, to support new renewable energy projects. For many, the added monthly cost will equate to a few coffees.
