Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s veterinary team have received a state-of-the-art digital x-ray machine thanks to the generous donations made by the local community in 2011.The new machine has revolutionised the way the Zoo’s veterinary team work in the short time since it was installed, allowing faster diagnosis.The Zoo’s Senior Veterinarian Dr Benn Bryant, said: “The new equipment provides better image quality than conventional film radiography so we can see a lot more detail and the images are generated in a few seconds.”“It allows us to record the images digitally so we can alter contrast and brightness rather than having to take another x-ray.”The digital x-ray machine was purchased with the assistance of money raised at the Raising Rhinos Ball in 2011 which many members of the Orana community attended.“On behalf of all of the veterinary team I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who contributed and made getting the digital x-ray machine possible, it is a fantastic asset for the Zoo,” Benn said.The new digital x-ray machine can be used on all the animals at the Zoo as it can be moved  around the zoo as well as taking x-rays of the animals in the Wildlife Hospital.The Zoo will also be hosting an open day at the Wildlife Hospital on Wednesday 22 February 2012 for members of the public to see what goes on behind the scenes and learn more about this free wildlife service.  Tours will commence from 10am.  For more information about the Wildlife Hospital open day contact 68811400 or see the staff at the Zoo’s information desk.
