Having the longest neck in the world, it's only fitting to celebrate World Giraffe Day on Sunday the 21 June, as this is the longest day or night (depending on the hemisphere).

 Here at Taronga Western Plains Zoo we’re very proud of our Giraffe herd and they’re very popular with visitors.

Giraffe have been a major part of Taronga Western Plains Zoo and are recognized on the Zoo's logo! Our Giraffe breeding program has been one of the most successful regional breeding programs and has impacted significantly for the protection of the species and of Giraffe conservation. Taronga Western Plains Zoo has four generations in our breeding group, ranging from 2 years of age to 25 years. Our current Giraffe family of 13 (and still growing) and breeding success demonstrates the dedication and passion in husbandry of the keeping staff. Taronga Western Plains Zoo has bred 24 giraffe assisting the Australasian region with its foundation population from across Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia.

The giraffe is one of the most majestic and unique creatures that have long inhabited the earth. Their unusual shape and height makes them one of the most recognised animals throughout the animal kingdom. Giraffes are divided into nine sub species and are well adapted to life in the African Savannah; however, they are an over-looked African icon.

 Did you know...Giraffes now rarely exist outside specific National Park areas. Their numbers have dropped significantly by 40% in the past 15 years, from 140 000 to now less than 80,000 remaining in the wild. Two of the nine sub species are now classified as endangered. Some threats that Giraffe are facing include the illegal bush meat trade, trophy hunting, poaching and habitat loss.

 Taronga is inviting you to come and celebrate World Giraffe Day at the Zoo. This is an international campaign to raise awareness and support efforts for giraffe conservation.
