Three months after making the move from Taronga Zoo Sydney Sumatran Tigers Jumilah, Kembali and Kartika are settling in well to life at Taronga Western Plains Zoo Dubbo.

Moving to Dubbo while the new Sumatran Tiger Experience is constructed in Sydney, the trio moved in October 2015 and have come to Taronga Western Plains Zoo with Tiger Keeper Megan Lewis.

Megan said she was happy with how the trio adjusted to their new environment and routine, quickly settling into their new home and building strong relationships with their new keepers.

“Mum, Jumilah and daughter Kartika are more confident than Kembali, however all three tigers have adapted well to their new conditions and Kembali is showing more confidence then we predicted” said Megan.

“Following his mother and sisters lead, Kembali who is normally a little sensitive and timid adapted faster than we thought he would, quickly becoming comfortable and relaxed in his new surroundings”.

Despite being used to the heat from Taronga Zoo Sydney, Megan said the trio are experiencing a slightly more dry heat and so keepers have been providing them with refreshing frozen treats when the temperature climbs too high.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo currently has four groups of Tigers and two exhibits, so the groups are rotated every second to third day.

Jumilah, Kembali and Kartika remain together at Dubbo and spent their first day on the second exhibit on 20 January 2016. The trio while sometimes shy are already relaxed in their new environment and demonstrating to keepers their ability to consistently adjust and adapt.
