Taronga’s veterinary teams have extensive experience and expertise in treating and rehabilitating wildlife including in emergency response operations such as providing emergency shelter, medical care and rehabilitation of bushfire-affected wildlife. This E-learning module has been developed to provide expert knowledge through an accessible platform to increase the capacity of veterinarians and veterinary nurses to assess, triage and treat bushfire affected wildlife.

Learning Outcomes

•    Understand important welfare considerations for burn patients
•    Understand the role of veterinary professionals in bushfire emergencies
•    Classify burns according to depth and percentage of total body surface area affected
•    Understand the effect of smoke inhalation
•    Thoroughly evaluate and triage a burn patient
•    Understand the criteria for euthanasia and acceptable methods
•    Treat (wound management, fluid therapy and pain management) burn patients appropriately
•    Understand the importance of nutrition in treatment and recovery of burn patients
