Taronga has an exciting opportunity for individuals to volunteer to enhance and restore our ecological communities. This role is for people passionate about the environment. Through hands on direct action you will protect our Sydney Harbour foreshore that provides vital habitat for our local flora and wildlife species.

The purpose of the role is to:

Taronga’s Bushcare Volunteers will assist our Horticulture team by utilising the principles of bush regeneration to rehabilitate weed infested or otherwise degraded bushland into a healthy vegetation community composed of endemic Australian plants along the Taronga’s Sydney Harbour foreshore and within the zoo.

The volunteers will be taking part in plant identification, weeding and planting, and be assisting to restore our native vegetation, supervised by qualified staff. Volunteers will be provided with required equipment and will be given onsite training in all aspects of the work including health and safety requirements.

These rehabilitated bushland areas provide a vital ecological wildlife corridor and are home to many animals ensuring that Taronga and the foreshore remains a habitat for our wonderful native animals.

Position details

  • Assist Taronga Zoo’s Horticulture team in removing weeds and preserving native vegetation.
  • Help work towards returning the zoo’s bushland to a sustainable natural ecosystem.
  • Be part of a successful Bushcare team working along the Sydney harbour foreshore.
  • The role will be for one day per month, on either a Wednesday or a Sunday

  • Enjoy working with people and be prepared to be part of a team
  • Show commitment, punctuality, reliability and a professional, friendly manner
  • Be physically fit and willing to work outdoors in all weather
  • Have an interest in issues relating to habitat and the environment
  • Interest in learning new skills in plant identification
  • Enjoy working in a natural bushland environment
  • Please note: this volunteer role will have no direct animal contact
