Education Volunteer – Taronga Zoo, Sydney

Taronga is searching for an Education Volunteers to support the Education Team.

More than 100,000 school students visit Taronga Zoo each year. They participate in workshops led by Taronga Education Officers or independently explore the Zoo – Sydney’s very own living classroom. Want to help us educate the conservationists of the future?!

Taronga Education Volunteers support the Education Team to administer education programs at the Zoo. You will work closely with the education bookings team and individual program managers providing administrative and logistical support, while increasing awareness about Taronga Education Programs. Volunteers will meet and greet schools and community groups, escorting them where necessary and help ensure that their experience with Taronga is positive from end to end. 

The purpose of the role

  • Support the Education Administration Team with call handling and general administrative support
  • Liaise with school and community groups to prepare for their Taronga visit
  • Greet school groups upon arrival to provide a smooth entry experience and provide general assistance to visiting schools throughout their excursion
  • Engage with students and staff attending Zoo Education programs to enrich their education experience at Taronga
  • Assist with program administration and support for other Zoo Education programs, such as Zoomobile and ZooSnooz

Position details

  • This role is available Monday to Friday, no weekends
  • Shift time: 9am-2pm
  • Applicants must be available to work at least one day per fortnight, ideally one day per week, during the school term 
  • This position requires a minimum commitment of 12 months
  • All Taronga Volunteers are required to complete induction training

Please note: this volunteer role will have no direct animal contact or teaching involvement

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Enjoy working with young people and be prepared to be part of a team
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Be comfortable addressing large groups of people (school and community groups)
  • Have a keen interest in education, wildlife, and conservation, and a willingness to learn 
  • Have strong administration skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated skills in the Microsoft office suite
  • Have a strong customer service ethic

Please note: Volunteers are expected to maintain a Zoo Friends Volunteer membership to the zoo, included initially in your Volunteer Programs fee of $104.00 which will be charged to successful applicant/s.
