Season 4 Episode 9

S4 E9: Black Rhino

After a 16-month wait, Kufara, our beloved 13-year-old Black Rhino, is in labour with her second calf. However, our joy turned to concern as CCTV footage revealed that the calf is coming out feet first, raising fears for its survival.

In another conservation endeavour, Taronga's Conservation Scientist, Rachel, works tirelessly alongside dedicated partners to revive the Chuditch population. Once widespread across 70% of Australia, Chuditch, or Western Quolls, now occupy only 5% of their former habitat. Rachel spends weeks in the outback of South Australia and Western Australia, trapping wild Chuditch for a rewilding program.

Meanwhile, Senior Vet Larry, mentors Vet Student Jess as she assists in her first general anaesthetic case, removing a lump from Rosie the Red Kangaroo's pouch, improving her health.

Air date: Wednesday 17th of February at 7.30pm on Channel 9.

On epsiode 9 we were thrilled to share the growth of Black Rhino calf Matobo, born thanks to groundbreaking reproductive treatment. Now weighing over 370 kilograms, Matobo loves munching on sweet potato, carrot, and apple, all provided by his caring mother, Kufara.

Recently, Kufara and Matobo moved to our behind-the-scenes Black Rhino facility, where Matobo can interact with other female family members, including his playful aunt, Sabi. Keeper Brent captured their adorable playtime!

Our dedicated keepers are focusing on training and building rapport with Matobo to ensure his ongoing healthcare and development.
