Temporary updates
In light of the forecasted severe heatwave in Dubbo next week, Taronga Western Plains Zoo will make some temporary changes to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our animals, visitors and staff. These measures will be in place from Saturday 24 January 2026 until Friday 30 January 2026, with temperatures predicted to reach more than 40 degrees each day.
These changes include:
• The Zoo will be open from 8:30am until 4pm, with final entry onto the circuit by 2pm
• Keeper talks will be temporarily suspended
• Giraffe and Elephant Encounters will operate as normal, while all other Animal Encounters and Tours will be rescheduled or temporarily suspended. If you have already pre-booked a tour or encounter and haven’t yet heard from our team, please call (02) 6881 1425
• Savannah Safari Tours will operate with reduced hours: 10am, 10:30am and 11am
• Bike and Pedal Boat Hire will be unavailable
Please note, animals will have access to additional shaded areas, indoor habitats and cooling systems which may result in reduced animal visibility.
Café Wild and The Waterhole Café will remain open so guests have access to refreshments, in addition to our water refill stations and vending machines around the Zoo.
Guests are strongly encouraged to plan ahead, bring adequate sun protection and plenty of water. We will continue to monitor weather conditions closely and will provide updates via our website and social media channels.
We thank our community and visitors for their understanding and cooperation as we work to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
