Police are investigating the theft of two Macaws from Sydney’s Taronga Zoo. Around 9am yesterday (Thursday 20 May), zookeepers reported the Green-winged Macaws, which are a South American species, missing from their enclosure. Police from the Harbourside Local Area Command attended the zoo yesterday and are investigating the theft. There was no sign of forced entry although the padlock to the aviary was missing. Zoo staff say the two distinctive female “Green-winged” or “Red and Green” Macaws will be difficult to sell on the black market and have appealed for their safe return. Police and zoo keepers also warn the birds can pose a danger if improperly handled. The break-in follows the theft of two other exotic macaws from a home at Bass Hill, in Sydney’s south-west, in February. Police from Bankstown Local Area Command are investigating that incident, in which the micro-chipped birds, named “Coco” and “Jackson,” were stolen from their cage at a home in Cann Street.
