Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s new Savannah Cabins project is well under way with all 15 cabins now on site to allow for connection of services and the remaining construction and landscaping to be completed.The project which is anticipated to open in September 2014, sees over $4 million invested in the new accommodation, which is co-funded through two separate grants of $250,000 each from the Australian Government under the Tourism Industry Regional Development Fund (TIRF) program and the NSW Government’s Regional Visitor Economy Fund (RVEF) administered by its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.“The Savannah Cabins is the final component of the Zoo’s three-tiered approach to providing visitors with memorable overnight experiences at the Zoo,” said Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s General Manager, Matthew Fuller.“The overnight experiences at the Zoo currently make up over 20% of the overall business which is set to grow even further with the addition of the Savannah Cabins to the accommodation offerings,” said Matthew.The Savannah Cabins complex comprises of 14 premium two bedroom self-contained cabins, all with two bathrooms and one cabin with one specially-designed bathroom for access by visitors with a disability.Each cabin can sleep up to six people and features a fully-contained kitchen, lounge area, private deck with barbecue, set on the secluded grasslands adjacent to Zoofari Lodge, near the African Savannah.“Taronga Western Plains Zoo is a striving to ensure Dubbo is unrivalled as a regional destination. Our current overnight programs, Zoofari Lodge and Billabong Camp, are already a large part of this approach and the Savannah Cabins will provide another unique option for visitors looking to stay and experience the Zoo,” said Matthew.NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism and Major Events Andrew Stoner said he was delighted the NSW Government’s funding will allow more people to visit the Central West and experience a night at the Zoo.“Not only will more people be able to sleep in luxury cabins and listen to the animals outside, but the extra capacity will help contribute to doubling overnight visitor expenditure by 2020,” Mr Stoner said.“The Savannah Cabins will provide guests with the freedom to stay and explore the Zoo, see what Dubbo and the surrounding region has to offer or relax in the tranquillity of this unique setting.”The Savannah Cabins will open in September 2014 with reservations now available.
