Taronga Zoo’s infant Asian Elephant had a restful night under the watchful eyes of his mother, Porntip, and Zoo staff who are working round the clock.The youngster spent the night in the warm elephant barn sleeping, however his mother, Porntip got little rest as she tended to her newborn.Although the calf has passed early critical milestones such as standing and suckling independently, it is still early days for the infant. Taronga Zoo’s Director, Cameron Kerr, said: “The calf still has a long way to go, although he is stronger than what we would expect for ananimal which has had such an eventful start to life.”“He still needs on-going care from his dedicated keepers and veterinary team who are working 24 hours a day to ensure his welfare.”“After surviving such a protracted labour it is not unexpected that he isn’t as robust as our other calf, Luk Chai, which was born after a quicker, more normal labour in July last year.”The calf and mother, Porntip, will remain in the warm barn whilst theZoo’s Elephant Keepers and veterinarians continue to monitor the newborn’s progress.
