Taronga Western Plains Zoo has joined with the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, to provide a variety of workshops on the Macquarie River for 200 students to celebrate World Water Day.

Students will focus on learning about recreational use of our local wetland environments and the importance of wetland ecosystems to biodiversity.

“The students participate in fishing workshops and learn how to rig rods, what the fishing regulations are for our area and have a practical session of fishing on the river,” said Zoo’s Education Officer, Kristy Robberts.

Students will also learn about food webs and ecology of riverbank or riparian systems by meeting some native Australia animals as well as participating in water quality testing and sampling macro-invertebrate such as Mayflies and Freshwater Shrimp.

“As part of the World Water Day activities, students are getting a hands-on learning experience that will provide them with the knowledge and skills to help conserve our environment, in particular wetlands, rivers and lakes.”

“It is important that students are aware of the things that will affect the environment and our waterways so they can take action and make better decisions to ensure a positive impact on the environment,” said Kristy.

World Water Day is held annually in March and provides an opportunity to celebrate the role freshwater plays in our lives.
