Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital is currently caring for three Emu chicks which were found orphaned in the wild.The three Emu chicks came from three different clutches and have been at the Wildlife Hospital from a young age. Currently the largest of the three chicks is about 12 weeks old whilst the other two are approximately six weeks old.They are all growing well and enjoy their morning and afternoon feed time where they receive plenty of mixed greens. The younger chicks are learning natural behaviours from the older chick and veterinary staff are very happy with their progress. It is hoped that in a few months time they will be ready to be released back into the wild.The three Emu chicks are just some of the many orphaned birds currently at the Wildlife Hospital. Spring is often a time when the Wildlife Hospital sees more young animals, but if you come across an young orphaned animal look around for the parents before removing the animal from its environment.
