Taronga-born koala, Tilly, has travelled to a new home in Nagoya, Japan, commemorating 30 years of conservation partnership work with Taronga’s Sister Zoo, Nagoya Higashiyama Zoo.

“Tilly has settled in well, eating normally and finding a favourite sleeping spot already,” said keeper Laura Jones, who accompanied Tilly on her journey to Japan.

Tilly’s arrival was celebrated with a ceremony last month.

“It was a great experience to visit Nagoya and see the koalas being looked after with great care,” said Laura.

Nagoya is Sydney’s Sister City of more than 30 years and Taronga Zoo has shared a close relationship with Higashiyama Zoo during this time.

The Sister Zoo relationship between Taronga and Higashiyama illustrates the effectiveness of international co-operation between Zoos in conservation and education.

“The relationship allows the two zoos to share knowledge and the staff at Nagoya are very passionate,” said Laura.

As a result of this strong conservation partnership, a successful koala colony has been established at Higashiyama Zoo. Koalas are now one of the most popular and beloved animals at the zoo.

Taronga received Australia’s first Greater One-horned Rhino, Dora, from Higashiyama Zoo, and a pair of rare Francois Langurs to establish a breeding group.

Students from Nagoya recently visited Taronga Zoo in August to meet koalas and other Australian wildlife.
