Taronga Zoo Sydney is one step closer to welcoming back one of its most beloved experiences, with construction kicking off to upgrade the Zoo’s iconic Sky Safari, ahead of a late 2027 reopening.
First launched in 1987, the Sky Safari was a much‑loved feature of Taronga Zoo for more than 30 years and has been greatly missed since it retired in 2023. The start of construction marks a major milestone in bringing back the reimagined experience for today’s visitors and future generations.
The upgraded Sky Safari will significantly improve accessibility, capacity and comfort for guests, while offering spectacular aerial views across Taronga Zoo and Sydney Harbour. Additional, larger gondolas will accommodate prams, larger wheelchairs and groups of up to 10 people, creating a more inclusive experience for families and visitors of all abilities, something the former Sky Safari could not provide.

“It’s incredibly exciting to be one step closer to restoring this much‑loved experience,” said Taronga Zoo Executive Director Nick Boyle. “The upgraded Sky Safari reflects our commitment to being a Zoo for everyone, honouring what people loved about the original, while delivering an inclusive, sustainable and unforgettable experience that guests will enjoy for decades to come,” said Boyle.
Following the original 900‑metre route, guests will once again enjoy a bird's-eye view of some of Taronga’s most iconic animals including giraffes, zebras, rhino and chimpanzees. A new lower station will better integrate the experience with the Taronga Zoo Ferry Wharf, encouraging guests to travel to the zoo via public transport in keeping with the zoo’s sustainability goals. A new, lower station will feature DDA‑compliant ramping, shade, amenities and elevator access, while increased gondola capacity will of reduce queuing.
Construction has been carefully planned to minimise disruption, and Taronga Zoo will remain open throughout the works. While some temporary changes will be in place at Taronga guests can continue to enjoy a full day out, with regular updates provided on Taronga’s website.
