The Taronga’s Environmental Sustainability program strives to imbed sustainability at the core of Taronga’s activities, to achieve sustainable outcomes and reduce environmental impacts.
Sustainable Advantage Gold Membership
In 2017 Taronga Zoo and Taronga Western Plains Zoo have been awarded gold partnership status under OEH’s 'Sustainable Advantage' program in 2017. The gold status recognises and showcases our efforts for outstanding environmental achievement, leadership and strong commitment to operate in a manner which is more environmentally attuned. Taronga is the 11th organisation and the second government institution to have achieved this leading status.
Net Zero Carbon Strategy by 2025
Taronga has been working in partnership with OEH to develop its Net Zero Carbon Strategy. This strategy outlines a clear pathway of how to achieve Taronga’s previously established target of becoming carbon neutral by 2025. The priority of this strategy is to reduce emissions through energy efficiency; onsite renewable energy generation, waste reductions, sustainable procurement and appropriate emission offset schemes. The Strategy also includes objectives to integrate sustainability into systems and processes while mitigating and controlling environmental risk.
Taronga is committed to lead by example by exemplifying and showcasing best practice Sustainability across both our zoos. Taronga’s Sustainability Strategy (2016-2020) aims to embed environmental, social and financial sustainability across all areas of the organisation.
In doing so, Taronga strives to lead in the areas of resource efficiency, waste management, supply chain, care of our land, social responsibility, market transformation and behaviour change.
