Taronga’s Sustainability team is responsible for reducing the environmental impact of both of our sites across Sydney and Dubbo – managing everything from electricity, water, waste and supporting other teams to embed sustainability into the work they do. This is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience in corporate sustainability and behaviour-change, and learn from a team with an ambitious and leading sustainability agenda.
The purpose of the role
To assist the Sustainability team in delivering Taronga’s commitment to be a leader in environmental sustainability, including educating and promoting best-practice sustainability behaviour for our teams and guests. This position will assist in the delivery and monitoring of key strategic projects such as Taronga’s Net Zero emissions pathway, water monitoring and reduction, and circular economy.
Position details
- Commitment of 1 (one) day per week, Mon-Fri (no weekends available for this role) – 12 month minimum
- Educate and support Zoo staff and guest to make informed source separation and recycling decisions.
- Support staff-led sustainability initiatives such as uniform recycling
- Assisting the sustainability team with day to day operations (Waste, water and energy management).
- Educating guests on the sustainability measures already in place at the zoo.
- Support our Zoo Keeping team’s commitment to a chemical-free back of house area, and provide support other teams to increase uptake of eWater.
- Assisting with sustainability initiatives at events (Twilight at Taronga etc)
- Providing support in Our Green team meetings – and ongoing support for Green Team projects and events like Beach cleans.
To be successful in this role you will:
- Passion for Sustainability, the environment, and helping others.
- Completed, or undertaking a qualification in Sustainability, Environmental Management or Science (or similar). Qualification can include any tertiary level including TAFE level or Bachelors.
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, preferably some experience in science communication
- Experience using MS Excel to analyse complex data
- Class c Drivers Licence
