Breeding season is coming to end and our penguin colony has now grown to 71 Little Penguins. Fourteen of the penguins born this year have already joined in with the adults and another five are in the penguin crèche learning to feed from Keepers.
Taronga Western Plains Zoo welcomed an Eland calf on Tuesday 1 February 2011. The little female is doing very well and has already started to mingle with the older calves from last year’s breeding season.
A special celebration is taking place today for Kufara the Black Rhino which turns one this week! Kufara was born on Thursday 17 February 2010 to first-time mother Bakhita and is the second generation of Black Rhinos to be born at the Zoo.
Taronga Zoo’s young male elephant, Luk Chai, 5, had some dental work on his tusks today. Taronga’s Senior Veterinarian, Dr Larry Vogelnest, said some elephants including Luk Chai, have brittle tusks that are prone to cracking and infection.
Taronga's male elephant Luk Chai is being seen by an expert elephant dentist tomorrow to check out his teeth and tusks. Luk Chai has especially small brittle tusks which, through normal play he damages and has suffered recurrent infections.
